The Blackfoot Language Digitization Project (BLDP) provides a growing array
of services to improve the effectiveness of teaching materials for Native
American end-users. The project connects pedagogic materials to teaching
materials in the BLDP digital library collection. The BLDP helps teachers and
faculty understand how to use BLDP materials in ways that are engaging,
interesting, and effective, embodying key principles of teaching and learning.
The BLDP projects ensures that seekers of Blackfoot culture and language
teaching materials also find corresponding pedagogic information.

The BLDP materials are designed to be easily customized by teachers so that
they can be adapted to meet the interests and needs of the Niitsitapi
communities they serve, and to be integrated seamlessly. The BLDP
collection of pedagogic materials and teaching examples foster sharing and
reuse of content archived in the BLDP database. This work of the BLDP is the
basis for a generalized service that will be rolled out over the next three year
of this project.

The BLDP project fills a recognized gap between instructors finding teaching
materials and knowing how to use them effectively. Partnerships with campus
centers for teaching and learning extend the reach of this project. Exploring
its use in course management systems, a primary tool used by faculty when
designing and delivering cultural and language courses, also extends the
reach of BLDP services.

While the immediate focus of the BLDP is on the digitization of literature,
photographs, and audio-visual materials on the Niitsitapi, the four tribes of the
Blackfeet Confederacy, our long-term goals include the digitization of cultural
and language materials for any Native American community that wishes to
participate in a similar project.

The BLDP is, and will remain, dedicated to the education of culturally literate
children.

The BLDP strongly recommends the children's books of Dawn Publications. They effectively
portray Native American concerns for the natural environment conveyed through the oral
traditions, and uniquely identify the human relationship within the natural order of things.
